Pre and Post Surgery Rehabilitation

ECP Physiotherapy are industry leaders in orthopaedic pre- and post-operative rehabilitation. We work closely with many orthopaedic surgeons around South Australia, to ensure that you are receiving the highest level of care and give you confidence that together, we will lead you through your recovery, and back to the activities that you love.

We use evidence-based protocols that have been developed in conjunction with leading orthopaedic surgeons in Australia, and successfully used with clients for many years, to allow you to recover safely and quickly.

We understand the emotions that may come with needing surgery, which is why we are here to support you and answer all of your questions throughout the entire journey, from pre-surgery right through to getting you back to all of the activities you love.

ECP Physiotherapy can also help you to delay or avoid surgery in some situations. Conservative management is repeatedly proving to help with pain, mobility and healing in many injuries and conditions, allowing individuals to continue an active lifestyle without requiring surgery. Many leading surgeons are also recommending a trial of conservative treatment as a first treatment option also. If you are unsure what the right treatment option and path is for you, or whether you may be able to avoid surgery, we can assess and educate you on your options, providing referrals where appropriate.

Why is Pre-Operative Rehab Important?

Preparing your body before surgery is crucial for a successful outcome. We will work closely with you to develop a personalised pre-operative rehabilitation plan tailored to your specific needs. The goals of pre-operative rehabilitation include:

  1. Strengthening: Improving strength in the surrounding muscles prior to surgery can significantly help to improve the ease of your post-operative recovery.
  2. Range of Motion: It is important that we can achieve as much mobility as possible through a range of targeted exercises.
  1. Pain Management: Ensuring that you are in minimal pain before your scheduled surgery, will improve you post-operative recovery. There are many ways we can help you to manage pain leading up to surgery.
  2. Education and Preparation: A big part of our role in your recovery is to ensure you are as prepared as possible, both physically and mentally, and know what to expect at every different stage of your journey. We are here to answer any questions you may have about the process, post-operative care, timeframes, and lifestyle modifications.

By engaging in pre-operative rehabilitation, you can enhance your physical condition, promote a faster recovery, and potentially reduce the duration of your rehabilitation post-surgery.

What does Post Operative Rehabilitation involve?

After your surgery, our physiotherapy team will be by your side to facilitate a safe and effective recovery. Our post-operative rehabilitation program is designed to address your specific surgical procedure and individual needs. Here’s how we can assist you:

  1. Pain Management: Our first goal is to help you reduce and manage your pain post-surgery. We will also help to reassure you what is a ‘safe and expected’ level of pain and what you should or should not be doing.
  2. Mobility and Strength: We will generally see most patients 1-2 weeks post- surgery (surgery dependent). You would have been provided with some exercises in the hospital which we can assess to ensure you are doing them correctly, and start to progress where possible. We will write you a program and talk you through the different phases of your recovery, gradually building on your strength and mobility until you have achieved your final goals.
  3. Gradual Return to Activities: As your recovery progresses, we will gradually reintroduce specific activities or sports, ensuring a safe and structured approach to prevent re-injury.
  1. Patient Education: We believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and understanding. We will educate you about the healing process, precautions to take, and home exercise programs to optimise your recovery.

Our experienced physiotherapists are committed to providing compassionate care, close monitoring, and ongoing support throughout your post-operative rehabilitation journey.

What happens in the appointment?

  • When you book your appointment, we will contact your surgeon for an operation report or medical records so that we have all of the relevant details of your surgery and are prepared for your first appointment
  • Your first appointment is an opportunity to assess how you are going, to see if you are performing your hospital exercises correctly and progress them if need be. It is also an opportunity to ensure you are managing pain levels, are progressing well and can ask any questions you may have.
  • Together, we will develop a plan together, that is based on the goals you would like to achieve, and set out a guide for what is going to be involved to achieve that.
  • We will communicate with your surgeon to update them on your progress along the way.
  • Your rehabilitation will continue until you are back doing all of the activities that you love.
